River City Church of Lafayette, Indiana was gifted a unique opportunity for community outreach when they acquired the nearby derelict shell of a former Payless grocery store. Working with the church, Accompany, and Kettelhut Construction, KJG designed a new facility to both expand their adjacent STEAM daycare and create large new spaces to house community events that their existing church space could not support. River City Community Center now hosts a large, flexible 550 seat auditorium, supporting kitchen, multi-function classrooms, and a vibrant, open lobby with an appealing café. STEAM Academy was also able to double their childcare capacity in addition to providing for younger ages and adding indoor play spaces. Updating the démodé exterior façade created a bold statement with a deep blue painted river conjoining with a river of tinted blue and green glass that spills light into its open lobby.
